Lime Plaster Walls and Ceilings
Original lime plaster is the defining surface challenge in Tunbridge Wells period work. Standard vinyl emulsion traps moisture, causes delamination, and eventually fails. The failure is often mistaken for a damp problem. It is a paint problem.
We use breathable mineral or clay-based wall paints on lime plaster, with a compatible primer coat.
Regency and Victorian Joinery
Original sash windows, panelled doors, and deep skirting boards on 19th-century properties require careful assessment. Where there is significant build-up or failure, we strip back to sound timber carefully to preserve the moulded profile.
Stucco and Rendered Exteriors
The stucco facades of Calverley Park and The Pantiles are among the most architecturally important surfaces in the borough. We specify breathable coatings on all porous historic render. See our exterior painting page for the detailed specification.
Cornicing and Decorative Plasterwork
Original Regency plasterwork is irreplaceable. We treat it accordingly: careful masking, no tape directly on fragile surfaces, and hand-cutting of all paint lines against moulded profiles.

Listed Buildings and Colour Consultation

Listed Building Considerations
The Calverley Park villas are all Grade II* listed. Repainting interior walls does not normally require consent. Changing the external colour may require it. We advise on the relevant rules after assessing the property.
Period-Appropriate Colour Consultation
Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, and Papers and Paints have developed ranges that align with period colour traditions. Palette advice is built into the quotation visit at no extra charge.
Whole-House Period Projects
For a combined interior and whole-house period project, we write a complete specification covering every surface and room before quoting.
Our Period Property Painting Process
1. Property Assessment
We examine every surface in scope, identify plaster type, existing coatings, condition of joinery, and any listed building constraints.
2. Written Specification
We produce a surface-by-surface specification — primer system, finish product, application method, and repair items.
3. Preparation
Existing surfaces assessed for compatibility. Incompatible coatings addressed. Lime plaster receives a breathable primer.
4. Paint Application
Breathable systems require adequate drying time between coats. We build the correct intervals into the programme.
5. Inspection and Handover
All surfaces inspected in good light. Touch-ups completed. Walk-through with you before close-out.
